Summer is upon us and as the temperatures start to heat up I thought I’d review a great beer for warmer weather. Summerfest by Sierra Nevada. Described as a Czech-style lager (think Budweiser’s hot sister) it’s incredibly light yet flavorful and at 5% ABV it’s easy to have a couple and not get too buzzed. Most of you should have access to this beer depending on where you live as stated in the previous review, Sierra Nevada now has a brewing facility in Mills River, NC. Let’s get down to business.
Appearance- This beer pours a clear bubbly straw color and nice white head. Slightly brighter and more rich in color than say a Bud/Miller/Coors’
Smell- Has really nice light sweet and lightly citrus smell. Kind of like a Blue Moon with lemon type of smell and a really nice almost lightly spicy smell.
Feel/Taste- The light amount of carbonation really lends a lot to this beers drinkability. Slightly roasted malt gives a nice sweetness and faint hops make this a really balanced beer. Hops a malt strike a perfect balance where one ingredient doesn’t seem to outshine the other. This is seriously a Bud/Miller/Coors on steroids.
Overall, I hope you get a chance to try this beer and it becomes a staple in your fridge/cooler. Its a bit of a nice departure from the other beers from this brewery as they tend to be not as approachable as this one is I think. In the reviews to come I will be featuring different styles from many excellent breweries as well as some “Beer 101” type of posts as well. So be on the lookout for those. Cheers.
