Designing Moments

Physicists call the smallest slice of meaningful time Planck time. It’s about five times ten to the negative forty-fourth power of a second. Anything shorter than that, and time itself stops making sense. It’s not something we can comprehend.

Psychologists put our “now” at roughly three seconds. Everything inside that 3 second window registers as one thing. It’s the smallest piece of time you actually live. It’s one moment. String it together and you have a series of moments. Divide, and… well… good luck. It stops making sense the same way physics stops making sense below Planck time.

If you’ve read any of my writing, you know how often I talk about moments. Series of moments create memories. Series of memories create a life well lived.

Every morning I take a shower. Again when I finish a gym or a pool session. There’s nothing special about it except how much I love the scent of my shampoo and body wash. I get in and feel the hot water, and experience the smell of getting clean. And I love it. I’m not thinking about anything except the shower’s sensory inputs. It’s a chain of pleasing 3 second moments strung together that make my daily experience just a little better.

When we film a hunt, we don’t film everything and hope something works. We understand the “moments” that make a hunt a hunt, the hike in, sitting down to glass, looking through binos, the set up and tension before squeezing the trigger. These are all moments, or strings of moments that create the experience we all love so much. And there’s more to it. There’s everything we see and hear in the natural world. So we try to capture that as well.

Most of us don’t run our lives like this. We wait for moments to happen. Often they don’t. Other times they do, but our minds weren’t present to notice them.

Instead of waiting for them to happen. What if we design them? What are the things you love?

A cup of coffee you actually taste. The sound of rain on the roof. Five minutes on the porch before anyone else is up in the morning. Just you, and the sights and sounds of an awakening world.

Put them in your day the way you’d put a shot on a shot list, and then show up for them.

The moment isn’t the shower. The moment is noticing the shower. That awareness turns three seconds of passing time into something you keep.

Design more of them.
