Baja Roosterfish 2026

Iconic Baja fishing experience
Image

June 6-10, 2026

This experience is a journey to the East Cape of Baja California Sur, targeting one of saltwater fly fishing's most iconic species—the Roosterfish. Based out of La Ventana, we'll fish the pristine waters between Punta Arena and Los Barilles aboard pangas with experienced local captains who know these waters intimately.

Primary target is Roosterfish, with excellent opportunities for Jack Crevalle and Dorado depending on conditions and season. This is a hosted Mountain Project trip—community-focused, film-documented, and designed to bring together anglers who want to chase aggressive fish in warm water with good people.

Expect early mornings, sight-fishing opportunities, explosive strikes, and evenings spent comparing notes over tacos and cold beer in La Ventana. This is Baja fishing at its finest.

Day 1: Arrive Cabo, Drive to La Ventana

    Friday June 6, 2025

Fly into Los Cabos International Airport (San José del Cabo). Ground transportation will pick you up and drive approximately 90 minutes north along the East Cape to La Ventana.

La Ventana is a small fishing village on the Sea of Cortez known for world-class wind sports and exceptional fishing. We'll be staying at Amina Wind Resort, located between La Ventana and Los Muertos (the boat launch).

Settle into your private room, organize gear, and get ready for three days of fishing. Evening group dinner in La Ventana to go over the plan and meet the group.

    Day 2: Fish Day 1

    Saturday June 7, 2025

Early departure from the resort. Breakfast will be provided on the boat. Launch from Los Muertos and fish the waters around Punta Arena, Muertos Bay, and surrounding structure depending on conditions and where the captains are finding fish.

Two anglers per panga with an experienced local captain who knows these waters. Bait is provided. You'll be targeting Roosterfish (primary), Jack Crevalle, and Dorado. Expect sight-fishing opportunities, aggressive strikes, and long fights.

Return to the resort in the afternoon. Dinner on your own in La Ventana or at the resort if the restaurant is open. Film crew will be capturing the day's action for the Mountain Project film.

    Day 3: Fish Day 2

    Sunday June 8, 2025

Another early morning departure. By Day 2, the group will have a better understanding of the fishery and what's working. Captains will adjust strategy based on Day 1 results—whether that's running farther for Dorado or staying shallow for Roosterfish.

Continue fishing from pangas with breakfast provided on the boat. Two anglers per boat. All fishing is being filmed for the trip documentary.

Return to resort in the afternoon. Group debrief and dinner in La Ventana.

    Day 4: Fish Day 3

    Monday June 9, 2025

Final day on the water. Push hard for any remaining opportunities. Roosterfish can be finicky—sometimes it takes three days to dial in the pattern. Captains will put you on fish based on what they've learned over the previous two days.

Make the most of the last day. Return to the resort in the afternoon, clean gear, and prepare for departure the following morning.

Final group dinner in La Ventana to close out the trip.

Day 5: Depart La Ventana, Drive to Cabo, Fly Home

    Tuesday June 10, 2025

Ground transportation will pick you up at the resort and drive back to Los Cabos International Airport for your flight home.

    Target Species

Roosterfish (primary target), Jack Crevalle, Dorado

    Fishing Style

This is a hosted trip with experienced local panga captains. Two anglers per boat. You'll fish from 22-24 foot pangas—the traditional open boats used throughout Baja for inshore fishing. These boats are simple, effective, and put you right on top of the fish.

Fishing techniques include sight-casting to feeding Roosterfish and Jacks, and running slightly offshore for Dorado depending on conditions. Bait is provided. You'll need to bring your own tackle (detailed gear list will be provided).

Fishing starts early with 6 am launches and will conclude by noon or 1pm. We then have the remainder of the day to eat tacos, relax, or continue fishing from the shore.

    Location & Conditions

La Ventana sits on the East Cape of Baja California Sur, facing the Sea of Cortez. The water is warm, clear, and loaded with bait in June. Expect hot weather (90s), light winds in the morning, and afternoon breezes.

The fishery around Punta Arena and Los Muertos is known for consistent Roosterfish action, especially in summer months. Jacks are aggressive and plentiful. Dorado show up when conditions are right.

    Film Project

This trip will be documented as a Mountain Project film. All participants will be featured in the film, and content will be captured throughout the trip—on the water, at the resort, and in town. This is a community-builder, not just a fishing trip.

    What to Expect

June in Baja is toasty. Expect temperatures in the high 80s low 90s, strong sun, and light morning winds. The fishing can be incredible, but Roosterfish are not guaranteed—they're sight-fishing fish that require patience and persistence.

Jacks are aggressive and will eat almost anything. Dorado show up when bait concentrations are right. Your captains know these waters and will put you in position to catch fish.

This is a community trip. You'll be fishing with other Mountain Project members, sharing meals, swapping stories, and building relationships. It's as much about the people and the place as the fish.
